In honor of mental health awareness month, I wanted to share a tea spell that I use regularly. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 18.1% of the US population are affected by anxiety, that’s nearly 40 million people! I’m one of those folks who is affected by anxiety. Years ago I started looking into alternative medicinal options for treating my anxiety, and I of course coupled that with my witchcraft, because why would a witch ever leave a tool in her bag if she could use it instead?
I actually started in my copy of The People’s Pharmacy Guide to Home and Herbal Remedies. It’s not a bit magickal, but it is a perfect resource to cross-reference mundane and medicinal uses for plants. That’s where I came up with my anti-anxiety brew. You see, there’s a plant called kava-kava which has shown to be effective in both animals and in human placebo controlled tests for reducing anxiety. Kava-Kava has also been used historically to identify the spiritual causes of ailments.
Another ingredient to the spell is Valerian root. Valerian is another herb which has been studied by scientists for it’s use in treating anxiety. Magickally, it’s tied to spells to end negativity, stopping guilt, and developing self acceptance. All of which can be useful in a spell to combat anxiety.
The next ingredient is chamomile. Chamomile is best used in spells for peace, tranquility, and purification, though it can also be used for dream magick. The tranquility inherent in chamomile as a magickal ingredient lends itself very nicely to a spell designed to reduce anxiety.
Finally, you need lavender. Lavender is calming and purifying. Again here, the purpose is to calm your energies and purify them of whatever is agitating your anxiety. All together, the tea works to sooth anxiety and help you to identify what is triggering your anxiety so that you can treat it mundanely as well as magickally.
I used to mix this blend by hand, which, because it’s hard to find food grade kava-kava and valerian anywhere, usually meant getting several different teas, and combining them to the measurements I needed. However, this brand has a “sleepy” blend tea which works great actually as a pre-blended mix of all the ingredients you need for the spell. It’s also more cost effective than finding the individual teas or dried herbs for each ingredient, so that’s what I use now.
If you do want to mix the blend yourself, I recommend equal parts of all four ingredients. Brew a hot tea by steeping your blend in hot water for several minutes, and drink twice daily. I keep a mug with a sigil painted on the bottom of it, that’s charged to reduce anxiety, and I always drink this particular potion from that one mug.
